There's nothing more frustrating than a slow computer. Before you throw it out and buy a new one, know that most slow computers can be fixed — often for a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Common causes of slow computers:
For Windows users: 8GB is the minimum for comfortable everyday use. 16GB is better if you run multiple applications or browser tabs. For Mac users: Apple now ships with at least 16GB as standard, which is fine for most users.
Upgrading from 4GB to 8GB (or 8GB to 16GB) can make a huge difference, especially for modern web browsers and applications. (Try our RAM upgrade bottleneck checker — free calculator)
How to check your drive space: (Try our PSU wattage calculator to make sure your power supply can handle an upgrade)
How to check your drive space: - Windows: Open File Explorer → This PC → see how much space is used - Mac: Click the Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage tab
If your hard drive is nearly full, start by clearing your Downloads folder, empty the Recycle Bin, and uninstall programs you no longer use. If it's still full, an SSD upgrade is worth it — we can do this for most computers.
How to check startup programs: - Windows: Task Manager → Startup tab (right-click taskbar → Task Manager) - Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items
Common culprits: Spotify, Discord, Skype, Adobe software, cloud sync tools (Dropbox, OneDrive). Disable anything you don't need running all the time.
When to upgrade vs replace: - Under 3-4 years old → upgrade (SSD, RAM) is usually worth it - Over 5 years old → assess repair cost vs replacement cost - Heavily infected → sometimes a clean install is the best option
Where to buy RAM and SSDs in NZ: - PB Tech (pbtech.co.nz) — good range, competitive prices - Computer Lounge (computerlounge.co.nz) — specialist, good advice - Noel Leeming — convenient but often pricier - Amazon NZ — good for specific models, delivery takes a few days
We can advise on what your specific computer needs and install it for you. Call 022 362 9693 for a free assessment.
Viruses and malware are more common than most people think — and they're not always obvious. You might have malware on your computer right now and not know it.
Signs you might have a virus or malware: - Computer running slower than usual for no reason - Unexpected pop-ups, especially when browsing — especially ones that won't close - New toolbars, homepage changes, or search engine changes you didn't make - Programs opening or closing on their own - Unusual error messages or crashing more than usual - Friends receiving emails from you that you didn't send — this means your email account or computer is compromised - Your internet usage or data usage much higher than expected - Unknown processes running in the background
What to do if you think you have a virus: 1. **Don't click on anything suspicious** — pop-ups, links, or attachments you don't trust 2. **Don't give anyone remote access** unless you know and trust them — tech support scams are very common in NZ 3. **Don't enter passwords or banking details** on the affected computer until it's clean 4. **Disconnect from the internet** if you're concerned about data theft 5. **Call us** — we'll run a full diagnostic scan and let you know what's going on
Common scams to watch out for in NZ: Microsoft or Spark tech support calls — these are always scams. Real companies don't cold-call you about computer problems. If someone calls claiming to be from Microsoft, Windows, or your internet provider and asks for remote access or payment, hang up.
How we remove viruses and malware: We use professional-grade tools to scan and remove malware, spyware, and viruses. The process typically involves:
Step 1: Full diagnostic scan — we identify everything that's running on your computer and what's malicious
Step 2: Safe mode removal — we restart your computer in safe mode and run removal tools from there, which catches more malware than running in normal mode
Step 3: Browser cleanup — most malware lives in browser toolbars and extensions. We clear these out and reset your browser settings
Step 4: For heavily infected computers — we recommend a clean install of Windows or macOS. This takes longer but is the only way to be 100% sure everything is gone
Prevention is better than cure: - Keep your operating system and software updated — enable automatic updates - Use strong, unique passwords — a password manager helps (Bitwarden is free, 1Password is good) - Don't click on suspicious links or attachments — even in emails from people you know, be cautious of unexpected attachments - Use a reputable antivirus program — Windows Defender is actually quite good if you keep it updated - Be careful about what you download — stick to official app stores and known websites - Avoid pirated software — it's the most common malware vector
Our virus removal service: Virus/malware removal is $129-$159 depending on complexity. If we can't remove it, you don't pay — that's our guarantee. Call 022 362 9693 to book.
Getting a new computer is exciting — but setting it up properly takes time and know-how. And it always takes longer than you expect. We can make sure your new computer is ready to go, with all your data, software, and settings exactly where you need them.
What we do in a new computer setup:
Common things people forget to transfer: browser bookmarks, email contacts, WhatsApp chats (these need phone transfer), saved passwords in browsers, game save files, custom fonts, and email rules/filters.
If you're moving from Windows to Mac (or vice versa), we can help you adjust — the learning curve is real but manageable with the right setup.
Our new computer setup service: Full setup for your new computer — $129-$159 depending on complexity. Call 022 362 9693 to book. (Compare graphics cards before buying)
Your data is irreplaceable — photos of the kids, years of documents, business files. When something goes wrong, we understand the stress and urgency. And we know that the first few hours matter most.
Quick things to try yourself first:
What NOT to do if you've lost data: - **Don't keep using the computer** — every file you save, every program you install, and every update you run risks overwriting the data you're trying to recover. Power down the computer if possible. - **Don't restart repeatedly** — if the drive is failing, each restart can make it worse - **Don't use disk repair utilities** on a failing drive — they can make recovery harder - **Don't open the drive** — hard drives are sensitive; exposing them to dust destroys them
When to call a professional immediately: - Your hard drive is making clicking, grinding, or unusual whirring noises — this is a mechanical failure, not a software problem - Your computer won't boot at all - You formatted the wrong drive or partition - Your USB drive or memory card isn't being recognised by any device - Files disappeared after a power outage or crash during writing - Your SSD suddenly stopped being recognised
How data recovery works with us:
Recovery success rates: - Accidentally deleted files (Recycle Bin emptied): often 80-100% — depends on how long ago - Formatted drives: often 60-90% — depends on how much was written to the drive since - Failing drives: varies significantly — mechanical failures are harder than logical failures - Physically damaged drives: lower success rate, but we always try
Our guarantee: We don't charge if we can't recover your data. Simple as that.
Email is the backbone of modern communication — for personal use and business. We can set up, troubleshoot, and optimise your email across all your devices.
Gmail setup and support: Whether you're using Gmail for personal email or through a Google Workspace account for your business, we can set it up on your computer, phone, and tablet. We can also help with Gmail's more advanced features like filters, labels, and aliases.
Common Gmail issues we fix: - Email not syncing between devices - Can't send or receive emails - Two-factor authentication problems - Alerts that emails are missing or duplicates appearing
Microsoft 365 and Outlook: Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) is the standard for many businesses. We can: - Set up your Microsoft 365 subscription from scratch or migrate from another platform - Install and configure Outlook on your computer — desktop version, not the web version - Set up email on your phone and tablet (iPhone, Android) - Migrate your email from Gmail, Hotmail, or other providers - Troubleshoot sync issues between devices - Set up shared mailboxes for teams (e.g., [email protected]) - Configure email signatures and templates
Outlook problems we fix regularly: - Email not sending or receiving — usually DNS or port settings - Outlook crashing or freezing — often caused by a corrupted PST file - Sync issues between Outlook and your phone — conflicts are common - PST file corruption or oversized mailbox (over 50GB can cause serious performance issues) - Configuration after changing passwords — Outlook tends to break when passwords expire - Moving to a new computer — migrating Outlook data is not as simple as it should be
Email migration: Moving to a new email provider? We can migrate your emails, contacts, and calendars — so nothing is lost in the transition. This is especially valuable for businesses that are moving from one email platform to another and have years of historical email they need to keep.
Two-factor authentication (2FA): We strongly recommend two-factor authentication on your email accounts. It's the single most effective way to prevent unauthorised access — if someone gets your password, they still can't get in without your phone. We can set it up on Gmail, Outlook, and most other email providers.
Email security audit: We can audit your email account security: check for suspicious app access (third-party apps you've authorised over the years), review forwarding rules you didn't create (a common sign of compromise), check active sessions and devices you don't recognise, and make sure your recovery options are up to date.
Our email service: Email setup and configuration is $79. Call 022 362 9693 to book.
Printers and peripherals are the things that make your computer useful beyond the screen. But they can also be a source of endless frustration when they don't work. We can help with all of it.
Wireless printer setup: Wireless printers are brilliant when they work — and infuriating when they don't. We can: - Set up your wireless printer on your home network - Install the correct drivers on your computer — getting the right driver is half the battle - Troubleshoot connection issues — wireless printing problems are among the most common calls we get - Set up printing from multiple devices (computer, phone, tablet) - Help with AirPrint (iPhone/iPad) and Google Cloud Print issues
Common wireless printing problems we fix: - Printer not found on the network — often a simple IP address mismatch - Print jobs stuck in the queue and won't clear — the print spooler service needs resetting - Printer only printing one copy when you asked for three - Printer appearing offline even though it's turned on
Printer troubleshooting: Common printer problems we fix: - Printer not printing — driver issues, connection problems, or a stuck print queue - Print quality issues — streaks, smudges, faded prints usually mean low ink or a clogged print head - Paper jams — recurring jams often indicate a worn roller or a piece of torn paper stuck somewhere non-obvious - Printer not recognised — USB or network connection issues - Wireless printer won't connect — network configuration problems, especially after changing your router - Old printer acting up — sometimes a deep clean and driver update fixes it, sometimes it's time for a new one
How to fix common print issues yourself: Before calling us, try these: 1. Restart the printer AND the computer — this fixes more problems than you'd think 2. Clear the print queue: Windows → Control Panel → Devices and Printers → right-click your printer → See what's printing → cancel all documents 3. On Mac: System Settings → Printers & Scanners → right-click the printer → Reset printing system 4. Check ink or toner levels — low ink is the most common cause of faded prints 5. Run the printer's built-in cleaning cycle (found in the printer's settings menu)
Scanner setup: Scanners are great for digitising documents, photos, and receipts. We can set up flatbed scanners and document scanners, install the software, and make sure they're scanning to the right locations on your computer.
Other peripherals we help with: - External hard drives and NAS (Network Attached Storage) — setup and troubleshooting - USB hubs and docking stations — especially for laptops with limited ports - Webcams and microphones — setup for Zoom, Teams, recording - Monitors — additional monitor setup, display calibration - Keyboards and mice — including wireless and Bluetooth setup
Buying advice for printers: Not sure which printer to buy? We can advise based on your needs: - Home use, occasional printing: a basic inkjet (Epson or Canon) is fine — HP is reliable - Home office with more volume: consider an EcoTank printer (Epson) — the ink bottles are far cheaper than cartridges - Photo printing: look at Canon PIXMA or Epson SureColor — dedicated photo printers produce much better results - Business with scanning needs: a laser multifunction (HP or Brother) is more reliable for heavy use
Avoid: very cheap printers (under $100) — the hardware is often unreliable and ink cartridges are expensive.
Our printer service: Printer setup is $79-$99. Troubleshooting is $99-$149 depending on complexity. We always quote before starting work. Call 022 362 9693 to book.
